BENG

Since January 1, 2021, all new residential and commercial buildings in the Netherlands must comply with the Nearly Energy-Neutral Buildings (BENG) requirements. The energy performance is determined based on three criteria:

  • Maximum energy demand – measured in kWh per m² of usable floor area per year.

  • Maximum primary fossil energy use – also measured in kWh per m² of usable floor area per year.

  • Minimum share of renewable energy – expressed as a percentage of total energy consumption.

These requirements ensure that buildings are designed and constructed to be energy-efficient. The BENG calculation is prepared by a certified energy advisor and is mandatory when applying for a building permit for new construction.

Who is BENG for?
The BENG requirements are mandatory for:

  • Project developers and contractors of new residential or commercial buildings.

  • Architects and consultants involved in design and permit procedures.

  • Parties applying for a building permit for new construction.

Sparkling Projects is certified according to BRL 9500 and has its own certified advisors. We offer:

  • Technical advice on how to meet the requirements.

  • Optimization of the design for energy performance.

  • Support with applying for the building permit.
