BENG
Since January 1, 2021, all new residential and commercial buildings in the Netherlands must comply with the Nearly Energy-Neutral Buildings (BENG) requirements. The energy performance is determined based on three criteria:
-
Maximum energy demand – measured in kWh per m² of usable floor area per year.
-
Maximum primary fossil energy use – also measured in kWh per m² of usable floor area per year.
-
Minimum share of renewable energy – expressed as a percentage of total energy consumption.
These requirements ensure that buildings are designed and constructed to be energy-efficient. The BENG calculation is prepared by a certified energy advisor and is mandatory when applying for a building permit for new construction.
Who is BENG for?
The BENG requirements are mandatory for:
-
Project developers and contractors of new residential or commercial buildings.
